Icons of Horror and the Supernatural: An Encyclopedia of Our Worst Nightmares

As one who, perhaps fortunately, does not suffer from nightmares, this reviewer found Joshi's Encyclopedia totally absorbing and fascinating. Over the two volumes of the work, the reader is presented with a series of 24 essays, from The Alien to The Zombie, each covering a different aspect of supernatural or "horror" phenomena. Each essay is written by a different contributor, many of whom are well known writers of fiction in this genre, the rest being academics at US universities. Joshi himself, as well as being an authority on H.P. Lovecraft, has previously co-edited Supernatural Literature of the World (Joshi and Dziemianiwicz, 2005) (RR 2006/375) and is therefore well qualified to assemble this material.
