This book has the straightforward aim of listing in chronological order all the important events affecting European security since 1945. The period is divided into decades, for each of which an introductory essay is supplied. Though the author modestly declares that he does not claim to have provided historical analysis, these introductions to some extent do so. About 3,000 entries appear, typically with 50 to 100 words. Each has a general heading, such as The German Question. Domestic events in particular countries are listed if they had a major impact on European security, such as The Watergate Affair, and the same principle applies to events elsewhere in the world, such as the Korean War.
