Ernie Gross began this compilation as a young radio news writer in an attempt to add interest to each day's newscast. He found that there was no single reference work he could rely on at the time to give him a good overview of the events that occurred on a specific day. He decided to focus on the impact of certain persons on American life and he covered a broad spectrum of events - scientific inventions, geographical discoveries, landmark government actions, and disasters. After the first two editions, Roland H. Worth Jr took over and added more than 950 new entries for the period from 2000 to the end of December 2006.
