The role of the voluntary sector in the UK economy is a vital part of the economic structure of the country. In 2007 the income for charities was £46.16 billion (Charity Commission/The Regulator for Charities in England and Wales, 2008) and represented more than two percent of the workforce. They are therefore a significant player on the economic scene and their management requires careful and prudent attention.
