摘要

It is nearly 40 years since Mitchell Beazley first published Hugh Johnson's The International Book of Trees: A Guide and a Tribute to the Trees of our Forests and Gardens (published by Simon & Schuster in the US). Written in part as a lament to the loss of the billowing elm from the English landscape due to Dutch Elm Disease, this beautifully illustrated and superbly written book became one of the standard texts on trees and still graces the shelves of many general reference collections even though it might not be considered a "reference" work by the strictest reference librarian. Revised and expanded editions followed in 1984 and 1993 both under The International Book of Trees title. Now, after an 18 year gap, Johnson has produced a further much expanded and revised version, rebranded Trees: A Lifetime's Journey through Forests, Woods and Gardens. The title modification emphasises that this is a very individual and personal book, based on the author's voyage through all things arboreal and rooted both in his passion for trees and his practical experience of their husbandry. Johnson has an arboretum at his home in Essex and is a respected horticulture author, contributing the "Tradescant" column to the Royal Horticultural Society magazine The Garden for many years and being responsible for the landmark garden book The Principles of Gardening (1979). Some readers may also better know him as an authority on wine. Johnson is an author of numerous books on this subject - many general reference libraries will have in stock The World Adas of Wine (co-authored with Jancis Robinson) now in its sixth edition.
