This review is of the e-book version of this reference work. It was reviewed on the ABC-Clio-book platform. In print, it is a six-volume set. It was selected as a 2014 RUSA Outstanding Reference Source by the Reference and User Services Association of the American Library Association and a 2013 Top of the list Winner in Reference by Booklist. Compiled under the general editorship of Spencer C. Tucker, with assistance from James R. Arnold and Roberta Wiener, this massive encyclopedia (over 1.5 million words) attempts to cover every aspect of the American Civil War. It does a masterful job of this, and while the use of the word "definitive" in the title may be somewhat hyperbolic, there is no other available work that does a better job of being as comprehensive as this encyclopedia. ABC-Clio has long been known as one of the top publishers of history works and this effort proves to be no exception.
