摘要

The Coretta Scott King Book Award winners represent outstanding children's books by African American authors and illustrators. These books celebrate African American culture while incorporating universal lessons and values. Those universal values are the focus of Coretta Scott King Award Books Discussions Guide: Pathways to Democracy by Adelaide Poniatowski Phelps and Carol J. McCollough. The authors provide an extremely useful bibliography and book conversation guide which focuses on identified core democratic values, including liberty, diversity, equality, common good, justice, life, personal freedom, rule of law and pursuit of happiness. I found this text to be extremely well organized and easy to use. One organizational aspect that will appeal to K-12 educators and librarians working with curriculum materials is that the entries are sorted according to the grade level and then alphabetically. The goal of this text is to aid educators in integrating Coretta Scott King Award winners into classroom curriculum and lessons, so grade level is the intuitive place to start. Although not every award winner is featured, the authors identified approximately 115 Coretta Scott King Book Award winners from the past three decades that most clearly reflect the core democratic values. The selection of books is fairly evenly spread between grade levels, with books representing elementary, middle and secondary levels. There is also an index by which you can search the author's name, book title or by core democratic value.
