It goes on to acknowledge that there are many reference resources devoted to the technical and clinical aspects of pharmacology and implies a need for a resource that places these aspects in a greater social context. When it comes to placing pharmacology in a social context, there are notable examples of academic critiques of the pharmaceutical industry The Medicalization of Society (Conrad, 2008) and Reputation and Power (Carpenter, 2014) come to mind; however, it appears largely true that there is not a reference work quite like The Sage Encyclopedia of Pharmacology and Society in terms of scope and purpose.
