How Much Money Should a Company Make?

You are at home or on vacation. It's quiet. The phone isn't ringing. Your mind begins to wander a bit and a question suddenly appears before you: "How much profit should my company be making?" You don't know, so you make a note to ask some other people...after you get home from vacation, of course! You ask a couple fellow contractor and they don't know, either. You ask your distributor and he can't tell you. So it's off to the experts, those that run the industry trade associations and keep statistics. Those who know, or at least should know, give you an answer you were not quite expecting to hear. They tell you, "The average trades company makes a 3- to 5 percent pretax net profit."
