Quiet time

You may have read in Alex's Weekenders column last month that my slope soaring soulmate Steve Dorling has died from cancer. I'm not taking it very well. You don't get many true friends in life and Steve was my best one. I met Steve through aeromodelling many more years ago than I care to dwell on. Flicking through just the digital images I have of him to put this column together is setting me off again. Man we had some good times. Damn you Dorling and this stupid, reckless, indifferent, uncaring, indiscriminate disease for doing that to me again. Steve was many things to many people from hairy biker to gigging muso, aging hippy traveller to amateur painter. Bareback horse rider, clumsy skier, poet, accomplished writer, darling husband, doting father and interfering Englishman up the mountain.
