Rail Accident Investigation Branch launched

The new Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) opened its doors on 17 October 2005. The key aim of RAIB is to look at the safety of the railways without attributing blame or corporability and provide an independent investigation into any accident or incident. RAIB has been created as a direct result of Lord Cullen's enquiry into the Ladbroke Grove rail disaster in October 1999. RAIB takes precedence at all accident sites, with the exception of where the public interest is best served by a criminal investigation, i.e. when there are clear indications that a serious criminal act has caused the accident.
