The Midland Main Line route from St Pancras to Luton was largely untouched by modernisation in the 1970s. Many of the stations remained as they were since LMS days and the majority of the mechanical signaiboxes were still functioning controlling a loco-hauled inter-city and local DMU service.rnThe Class 127 diesel hydraulic DMUs were introduced in January 1960 and provided a regular commuter service from Bedford, Luton and St Albans to St Pancras until the early 1980s when electrification and Class 317 EMUs were introduced.rnThe longer distance inter-city trains from St Pancras to Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham, Leeds and Glasgow were still in the hands of the Class 45 Peaks with some trains hauled by Class 47s.
