Shenfield To Ipswich

This latest Middleton Press volume in their 'Eastern Main Lines' series puts another piece of the railway network jigsaw puzzle in place with a good b&w pictorial selection featuring the former Great Eastern main line and its offshoots from the outer London suburbs through parts of Essex towards Suffolk. There are some striking images of stations in the early years through to some contemporary shots taken beneath the wires with a good balance of steam, diesel and electric motive power and units to be found amongst the pictures. Shenfield enjoyed electric train services from September 1949, but the wiring to Ipswich was not completed until October 1983.
