Beginning in 1996, the Association of American Railroads sponsored several tests of longitudinal forces on bridges under unit trains powered by AC locomotives. The tests led to significant changes in the guidelines used to design railroad bridges for longitudinal forces. The changes and the steps taken to develop the new guidelines took several years of extensive research and development.
