Restoring Katrina-ravaged bridges

Solid advance planning, early inspection enable CSXT to quickly restore major Gulf Coast-area bridges that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Less than five months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, CSX Transportation had restored rail service on its heavily-damaged line through the area. Getting major bridges back in service, including the virtually-demolished two-mile Bay St. Louis structure, called for advance planning before the storm and solid early inspection to get the work moving immediately after the storm. CSXT's New Orleans & Mobile Subdivision roughly follows the Gulf Coast, in many places running right along the shore. As Katrina came ashore and moved inland, the storm washed out over 39 miles of track, destroyed signal facilities and severely damaged six major bridges and six smaller timber trestles.
