Pacific Harbor Line Keeps Trains Rolling

Combined, the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long beach are the busiest container ports in the Western Hemisphere. Moving those boxes, as well as thousands of carloads, between the ships and the nation's rail system is a big job handled by a small railroad, Pacific Harbor Line, named the 2009 Short Line of the Year by Railway Age.rnPHL, an affiliate of Anacostia & Pacific Co., operates and maintains 75 track miles (18 route miles) owned by the two ports. The railroad, which began operations in 1998, provides rail switching services for nine on-dock intermodal terminals and numerous carload customers. It exchanges nearly two million on-dock containers each year with BNSF and Union Pacific and about 36,000 carloads, reducing therncongestion on highways in the Los Angeles Basin.
