Much of the undercut waste fine material added to the track migrated downward and outward from the track, particularly in the first few weeks and months after placement. This could have happened during watering events and vibration from train traffic. Observers also noted that subsequent ballast sampling events did not display the expected coloration that would normally be present with the infiltration levels of carbon-rich fine material. This may be another indication that carbon-rich waste was transported out of the track section.
