In recent years, Railion Deutschland (formerly "DB Cargo") has been continuously modernizing its fleet, like many other transport operators belonging to the Deutsche Bahn group. Most of the new wagons are for the coal/steel and automotive market segments, but chemicals and other cargoes are catered for to some extent too. The newcomers to the fleet have either replaced their ageing predecessors with dwindling productivity or are fulfilling completely new types of customer-specific requirement - and are doing so better than any of the other transport modes.
