'Flying leopard' nears completion

Monitoring: Taking shape in the assembly shops of Tangshan Railway Vehicle Co and Changchun Railway Vehicle Co is the CIT400 infrastructure Inspection train. Designed for continuous inspection at 350 km/h with a maximum test speed of 450 km/h, this eight-car 25 kV 50 Hz trainset has a novel design of front end which Chinese engineers say resembles a 'flying leopard'. All eight cars are powered, with four traction transformers mounted on separate cars; all eight cars have their own traction converters, and there are seven auxiliary converters. Developing 18400 kw at the wheel rim, the train has a peak output of 20800 kW.
