European railway operators are looking for ways to fight copper cable theft along railway tracks, for both vital power and signalling cables. Nexans has developed and patented two different technical solutions to discourage copper theft and to track down the robbers and those who deal in stolen metals. Since copper reached record values in 2006, stealing copper cables laid along railway tracks has become a lucrative business for organised criminal gangs and for those who 'fence' stolen metals. Across Europe, hundreds ot incidents occur both night and day, adding up to thousands of tons of lost conduc-tors (primarily copper) and a replacement bill which runs into hun-dreds of millions of euros, a heavy burden to bear for cash-conscious railways.
