Railways with high traffic density have accumulated a vast amount of data and practical experience concerning proven methods to extend the life of their track; these range from sub-grade issues to vehicle dynamics. Economic pressures are now forcing railways to look again at their maintenance policies, and long-held practices and assumptions relating to rail longevity are now subject to additional scrutiny. The wheel-rail relationship is being examined with particular rigour as it is one of the most critical interfaces in the entire railway.
