The sheer volume of data communication taking place in modern rail vehicles is rising rapidly, thanks to the digitalisation and multiplication of both customer-facing and operational systems. Passengers increasingly demand onboard wi-fi connectivity to keep in touch with family and friends, or to work with e-mail and internet services while travelling. More and more sophisticated passenger information systems not only provide data about the journey and connections at key interchanges, but also offer weather reports, news and entertainment, along with advertisements to provide operators with a revenue stream (p32). At the same time, the growing use of CCTV for security surveillance of both the vehicle passenger areas and the platform-train interface also generates huge amounts of data.
