Conrail Rainbow Years, Volume 3

I was five years old when Conrail became a railroad company. My dad would take my older brother and me up to the yard to watch trains while my grandmother would visit with my mom and newborn baby brother. I didn't know anything about deferred maintenance, rationalization of redundant trackage, or any of the challenges of railroading in the Northeast in the 1970s. What I did notice was that, instead of the constant parade of trains hauled by grimy black engines, different diesels with bright paint jobs started to appear. I enjoyed this kaleidoscope of freight trains through Rochester, N.Y., until a few years later when everything was covered by a uniform coat of Conrail blue.
