Landmark F-Units in HO Scale

Though the General Electric GEVO may be today's "F-unit," with every manufacturer seemingly required to reproduce this most common contemporary prototype, for many years the F-unit enjoyed this position of supremacy in hobby catalogs. Though a few examples still see regular operation today, such as Colorado's Royal Gorge Route Railroad (royalgorgeroute.com) and many more are preserved on display, such as the Canadian-built F-unit wearing Kansas City Southern colors at Union Station Kansas City (uskc.org), EMD's F-unit exists only in the history books for most railroad enthusiasts. I recall several years ago reading an online forum post by a person lamenting the release of F-units in the hobby and complaining they'd never seen one in use and why do companies make them. This was shocking to me at first, having grown up seeing Gulf, Mobile & Ohio F-units in control of freights for many years.
