Howland Junction was the southwestern terminus of the Irondale, Bancroft & Ottawa Railway. Located In central Ontario In the region known as the Canadian Shield, the IB&O was opened in 1887, the initial line replacing a 6.75-mile-long wooden tramway that served an iron ore mine at Furnace Falls. The line was extended to Bancroft by 1910, but never made it to Ottawa. Iron ore and timber provided barely enough business to keep the line running, with round-trip trains limited to every other day, three days a week, taking an entire day to traverse the 50-mile main line at a breakneck speed of 15 miles per hour.
