COVID-19 heroes will be honoured by Great Western Railway and nine local BBC radio stations, with a competition launched to name Intercity Express Trains in their honour. BBC Radio wants listeners to nominate those who went above and beyond during the pandemic to help others. "We are asking people to tell us about their local heroes, those who have lifted your spirits, made them laugh or cry, or maybe even literally saved their life," said Head of BBC Audio and Digital Chris Burns. GWR Interim Managing Director Matthew Golton added: "As key workers ourselves, we recognise only too well the sacrifices many have made to keep people safe and we want to reward their efforts, it is lovely to be able to recognise just a handful in this way." BBC Radio Bristol, Wiltshire, Hereford and Worcester, Oxford, Berkshire, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and Gloucester are taking part. Each will select two listeners to have trains named after them.
