Maintenance at regular intervals is mandatory in order to make sure that a train or tram is working reliably and safely. However, different components on board a train have different maintenance cycles - each of which places specific demands on the specialist staff and facilities required to ensure that downtime is kept to a minimum. The ability to speed up this time-consuming and costly maintenance process is now being achieved, in particular by ensuring that each train and its important components, such as items of rolling stock and even individual axles, can be identified automatically as the train enters the maintenance depot.
