Modernisation of passenger rolling stock at SNCB

On the Belgian National Railway Company (SNCB/NMBS) modernisation work is increasingly included in overall rolling stock maintenance schedules. This article discusses the various aspects: the reasons for vehicle modernisation, the nature of the operations conducted, the economics and specific management processes. We shall also be looking at the latest developments as regards modernisation. We shall end with a brief account of some of the projects conducted by the SNCB's Long-Term Maintenance Centre in Malines.
