Rail-Air: convergence or divergence?

I'd like to take a somewhat broader look at this industry by putting it in the perspective of its sister industry, Air. Some aspects of the convergence between the two modes have been addressed in earlier presentations -High Speed Rail's competition with, or complementarity to Air is one, another is the use of airline management techniques such as yield management. The purpose of this article is somewhat different. But first why talk about Air at a conference dedicated to Rail? The two differ in many ways.
