Modernisation and renovation of operating resources

At the present time the Lithuanian Railways, a limited special-purpose company, are engaged in a reform process, the main aims of which are to separate operations and infrastructure, giving the State a more specifically targeted role once the latter's modernisation has been completed, deregulate the passenger and freight transport markets with the establishment of the legal conditions necessary to enable new operators to run trains on the network and implement a brand new passenger traffic concept with obligations under public law. The ultimate goal of all these measures is to create an attractive technical, legal and organisational transport system capable of bringing transit traffic to rail and offering full coverage of Lithuania's territory as a whole.
