In 2002, the European Commission commissioned the International Union of Railways (UIC) to investigate possibilities for creating a system providing European railway timetable and price data. Given the pressure from low cost airline services and the enlargement of the EU to 25 members, a simple, clear solution for informing potential passengers of the fares and times of European rail services has become a pressing need. In response, the UIC decided to develop a common European information system PRIFIS (Price and Fare Information System).
