The railway - the basis for transport potential in the Republic of Kazakhstan

In Kazakhstan, transport, which is one of the economic sectors contributing to the national infrastructure, operates in accordance with the general macroeconomic principles of the Republic. This includes making allowance not only for the relationships between economic sectors and production forms but also for territorial considerations. Kazakhstan has a sufficiently well developed transport system of rail, road, air, inland waterway and pipelines. The basic condition for the development of any given country is to have a well-developed rail network conducive to links between towns and regions, trade growth, service portfolio enlargement and individual mobility. Today the railway, which handles the lion's share of freight and passenger traffic, constitutes the backbone of the Republic's transport system. For the carriage of heavy bulk goods such as coal, ore, metal and grain, the Republic has no real alternative to rail.
