Stronger Arbiter would have prevented Metronet collapse

Asked by the Chairman of the Commons Committee on Public Accounts on October 19 how DfT might have avoided the collapse of Metronet at a cost to the taxpayer of up to £410m, as estimated by the National Audit Office in its report of June 5 (RB1344 p7), Permanent Secretary Robert Devereux said there was a loss 'because more taxpayers' cash went into this company than was commensurate with the economic spending of that company'.
