Network Rail's Strategic Business Case for New Lines illustrates the benefits of increasing operating speeds which go beyond increased revenue from shorter journey times. For example, reduced running times mean that each trainset can make more journeys, cutting the size of the rolling stock fleet.rnThis is illustrated in Table 111 (above). The savings are considerable, with a 10-car train costed at £24m. As a rule of thumb, a train's whole-life cost is shared equallyrnbetween capital, energy and maintenance.
