NR fined over crossing failings

Network Rail was fined £70 000 plus £25 000 costs at Norwich Crown Court on July 16, having pleaded guilty to charges of endangering passengers and train crew as well as road users by failing to maintain adequately Croxton level crossing near Thetford.rnJust before 06.00 on September 12 2006, a heavy rubber panel forming part of the crossing surface was displaced by a lorry, ending up on top of one rail and thus forming a Tamp. At least two cars then passed over the crossing, one losing control and spinning around. Shortly afterwards a passenger train travelling at 90 mile/h hit the panel and derailed, stopping 460 m further on foul of the adjacent track. There were no serious injuries.
