The first time RBI heard 'modular signalling' mentioned by Network Rail as an option for secondary lines at a conference in September 2008 (RB1327 p8), we were frankly puzzled.rnAndrew Simmons, NR's Director, Future Train ft Operational Control Systems, revealed that a pilot project planned between Crewe and Nantwich offered the prospect of 'reduced operating costs'. We wondered at the time what could be more 'modular' than a straightforward resignalling project with SSI modules, points and signals installed as required along with axle-counters for train detection.rnThe subject was raised again last month by NR's Head of Commercial,rnSignalling, Power ft Communications, Brian Neave at the 1RSE seminar (above). 'We have developed also in the last two or three years - and are now about to start rolling out for development - a modular signalling scheme', he said.
