RBI understands that a major cost-cutting exercise is now underway at First Great Western, where almost all overtime payments have been stopped. All departments not essential to the provision of the train service are expected to be 'slimmed considerably', with economy measures extending to the removal of drinking water dispensers from offices and depots. The decision to remove all contractors from depots was partly rescinded after it emerged that all DMU examinations from B upwards at Bristol St Philip's Marsh are carried by teams of specialist contractors. These duties cannot be covered by FGW staff alongside the overnight servicing of the DMU and HST fleets.
