Look for Network Rail to award a contract for electrification works under Phase 1 of the Northwest Triangle scheme, covering 30 km of double track between Castlefield Junction in Manchester and Newton-le-Willows. The Manchester - Liverpool route is expected to be completed under Phase 2 by December 2014, with the routes to Preston and Blackpool North completed by December 2016 under phases 3 and 4. Expect commercial close on the IEP and Thameslink train PFI deals to slip back to the New Year as efforts continue to raise the necessary private finance.
