Retrofitting Driver Advisory Systems and remote condition monitoring to existing fleets is becoming more attractive as the benefits of such equipment, fitted as standard to new rolling stock, become apparent. Southern has recently issued OJEU notices covering two of its fleets. DAS is to be fitted to Southern's 16 Class 171 Turbostar DMUs. The two-part requirement covers a stand-alone system providing what is termed 'core functionality', plus a wireless-enabled system able to receive and transmit data. Core requirements include energy-efficient driving, with the display of recommended speed and coasting points linked to on-train calculation of the speed profile, continuous location monitoring and comparison of actual versus recommended speed. The system should store data such as the route, timetable, temporary speed restrictions and train characteristics. Additional functionality required from the wireless system includes the ability to receive timetable updates from control and report back train position and speed, with the aim of improving recovery from service disruption. Estimated cost of the retrofit programme is put at £300 000 to €600 000.
