The entry into service of 69 Class 172 vehicles will finally release London Midland's Class 150 DMU fleet. Confirming funding for other TOCs to operate these cascaded cars, DfT announced on August 10 that 'space for up to an extra 8 800 rail passengers' would be created on key commuter services in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle.
