TransPennine Express announced on July 26 that its Eco-mode initiative had saved 10 million litres of diesel fuel since being introduced four years ago. According to the TOC, the amount of fuel saved each year by Eco-mode on its 51 Class 185 three-car Desiro DMUs is sufficient to power its fleet of nine Class 170 two-car Tubostars. The Class 185s, introduced in 2006, consume around 26 million litres of fuel each year. Modifica- tions developed by manufacturer Siemens enable the sets to shut down one or more engines temporarily when they are running downhill.
