A new approach to setting the variable component of track access charges, aimed at letting train operators share the cost benefits of rolling stock modifications which reduce track wear, has been put out to consultation by ORR. Responses are required by May 20. A current example of such modifications is the programme to retrofit HALL bushes to bogies on Siemens Desiro multiple-units (RB1384 p6). This reduces rolling contact fatigue in rails and wheels, cutting the risk of cracks and fractures.
