Limited choice for AGU engine

Hitachi requires a rating of 500 kW to 700 kW for the Auxiliary Generator Unit to provide the necessary traction performance from three engines in a five-car bi-mode SET. Comparable diesel trains with similar total weights, such as Voyagers and Adelantes, have all five vehicles powered. With only three engines in the bi-mode SET, the upper limit of this power range would maximise traction performance. However, the choice of rail traction diesel engines at these ratings is limited. The SET engine will also have to comply with the Euro Stage IIIB emissions regulations.
