The last two winters have seen a number of incidents where trains have suffered partial braking failures during sub-zero weather. RAIB reviews the complex reasons for this in its report on a near-miss involving a freight train and two passenger trains at Carstairs on December 22 2009. The freight train was 4L81 operated by Freightliner which left Coat-bridge at 19.21 heading for Tilbury. It consisted of 22 container flats hauled by two Class 86/6 electric locomotives, and was almost full with a trailing load of 1 275 tonnes.
