Southern launches mystery procurement

Announcing on November 14 that it would be exercising an option for 40 additional Electrostar vehicles, Southern also revealed that it was 'developing proposals' with DfT for a 'new procurement competition' for 116 dual-voltage 110 mile/h EMU cars. This would include an option for a further 100 vehicles.According to Southern, the new procurement competition 'will assist DfT's ability to address the wider rolling stock needs of the country'. Managing Director Chris Burchell said: '1 am pleased that Southern is able to assist the department in introducing additional capacity. The potential new order for 116 carriages will be exciting news for train manufacturers and for passengers'.
