Tenders were invited earlier this month for the supply and retrofitting of onboard ETCS equipment for the Class 43 HST power cars, starting the national roll-out of the European Rail Traffic Management System under a programme expected to run for approximately 15 years. The three ROSCOs are working on a joint procurement programme covering all existing passenger fleets that will need to be retrofitted with ETCS. It is assumed that new vehicles would be delivered with ETCS equipment already installed. Working with Network Rail's Programme Control Board, ATOC and consultancies, the ROSCOs have split the relevant fleets into three tranches, which should align with NR's projected roll-out of lineside equipment.
