'High-speed rail can strengthen its case and silence the critics by extending further and faster', said Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown on September 19, ahead of his appearance at the conference in Birmingham considering the wider benefits of HS2. 'The UK government's case for high-speed rail has come under recent scrutiny in terms of its value', said Brown. 'Key commentators', such as the Commons Public Accounts Committee (RBI446 p3), 'predict real business case challenges ahead if the current proposal for a network stretching only as far as Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds is progressed’, he pointed out.
