Following the liquidation of Scot-tish Coal Co Ltd with the immedi-ate loss of 604 jobs, it is clear that opencast mining in and around Ayrshire is in serious trouble. This is bad news for Freightliner Heavy Haul, which held contracts to deliver coal to power stations in England and Scotland, and already the finger is being pointed at ORR's proposal to set track access charges for coal at £4.04 per thousand gross tonne-miles during CP5.
