Revenue up, profit down at Arriva UK Trains

In its interim report covering the six months to June 30 2014, Deutsche Bahn AG says that the Arriva UK Trains business was 'particularly affected by increased farebox revenues and higher revenue support payments for the Crosscountry franchise', the latter up by €32m. Total revenue at UK Trains was €711 m in the first half of 2014, up 8.9% from €653m the year before and including positive exchange rate effects of €24m. However, this could not fully compensate for increased expenditure where the effects of 'lower train path utilisation fees' were offset by higher energy and maintenance costs. Personnel costs were up 10.1% year on year 'due to volume and wage increases', and there were also negative exchange rate effects.
