Get DfT out of rolling stock procurement

Rail Delivery Group Chairman and Stagecoach Group Chief Executive Martin Griffiths has made clear his desire for DfT to leave rolling stock strategy to the TOCs. Speaking to RBI's sister publication Railway Gazette International last month, Griffiths urged the government to allow the private sector to 'get on with the detail of procurement', insisting that this would be 'the best way to protect taxpayer value'. Citing Stagecoach's experience of introducing new fleets at Virgin Trains and South West Trains over the past 15 years, he added that 'when you hear that you're inheriting a contract that's been procured by the public sector, you immediately think "what have they missed?". 1 just don't believe it's their area of expertise.'
